For a four year old, I’d provide:
- a pocket microscope
- a cheap camera for kids
- his own notebook and pencil for drawing what he sees
- lots of time outside
- science museum membership/visits
-reading a lot of good books together and discussing them with him
- age appropriate games from the “Math for Love” company (I love “Rolly Poly” for this age)
- a refrigerator alphabet set that you play identifying letters and spelling short words with him
This is all designed to encourage and nurture his natural curiosity about the outside world, which is ultimately one of the biggest gifts a parent can give a child.
If you want to enroll him in a class, Brazilian Jujitsu has been amazing for our kids. They all started going to the BJJ gym as babies, and started classes at 4.
OK, let’s put on our striver parent hats for a second. I have a four-year-old. I’m not neurotic about getting such a young kid involved in a bunch of different stuff, but what things have the highest return for early involvement? What should I be thinking about? Any specific athletics? Piano? I probably don’t care enough about academics to focus on math or anything like that. I’m trying to think of things that will get a big bang for the effort required, things that will pay dividends over the course of his entire life by having started very early.
